The internet is a system that links millions of computers together. Anyone who works on a computer that is linked to the net can use it for research and communication. The internet was developed in the 'cold war,' apower struggle between communist and non-communist countries that lasted from 1945 to 1989. In the early 1950s , the united states defense planners were concerned about what would happen if soviet nuclear weapons destroyed key parts of the united states' communications system.
